Learn about the different types of deck lighting

An outdoor deck, when properly fitted with deck lighting can be a beautiful extension of your home interior that you can enjoy well into the future. It can be very useful to learn about the different types of deck lighting in order to best highlight certain outdoor features and enhance the atmosphere of your deck. The different styles of deck lighting include post cap lights, deck hanging lights, recessed step lights, and railing lights. Deck lights come in different types that are usually powered in three different ways: LED, solar, and low voltage. Deck lighting varies in initial purchase cost as well as cost for ongoing use and maintenance. You can add to the atmosphere of your deck and stay within your budget, by choosing carefully how your post cap lights, hanging lights or step and rail lights are powered.

Solar powered lights give off more of a glow. Solar deck lighting is very energy efficient and operates by using the power of the sun. They cost virtually nothing to operate after the initial purchase. Solar powered post cap lights are a very easy way for just about anyone to add light to their deck without having to do any electrical work or wiring. Solar powered lights will be especially effective for those who live in climates that provide sunny days throughout most of the year. If you live in a climate that is dark and cloudy throughout much of the winter, solar powered lights for your deck may not be ideal. The light can vary in strength depending on how much charge the unit received during the daylight hours. Most solar powered lights provide up to ten hours of light on a full charge.

LED deck lighting is an energy efficient alternative to traditional deck lighting. It is very low maintenance and tends to last longer than traditionally powered deck lighting choices. When thinking about the atmosphere you want to create for your deck, keep in mind that LED lights often provide a brighter light. The brightness of LED lights makes them perfect for illuminating darker areas, spotlighting a specific feature, setting them up as patio umbrella lights, or outlining deck boundaries and steps for safety reasons. LED light strings are also used for railings and decorating purposes.

Low voltage lights are the least energy efficient of the three types of deck lighting. Low voltage lights provide a softer, less harsh light which is not as bright as LED lights. These types of lights are often used to light deck stairs and railings. Low voltage lights can be used with timers so if you have a need for this function, low voltage powered deck lighting will be an ideal option for you.

Deck lighting - do you want it to be quiet and personal, or bright and lavish? We prefer the quiet style - what about you?

So to recap - an overview of deck lighting choices

So to learn about the different types of deck lighting that is available, take into consideration not only the style of lights, but how the style of lighting you choose is powered. Remember that post cap lights, hanging lights, recessed step and railing lights can be solar, LED, or low voltage type lights. Keep in mind the atmosphere you are trying to create with your outside deck and make a deck lighting choice that will fit well into your budget and you will enjoy your outside deck and your hand-chosen deck lighting for many years to come.

Is solar the most energy efficient?

davery1968 16 months ago

I think the quiet style is more the choice for my wife and I. That would blend in well with our deck fireplace. Adding solar to the deck lights and I am in!

Hmm, I'd never thought about using such interesting deck lighting - we just have our usual under eaves outdoor lights. Something to think about...

Yes there are so many different types available these days :) Gone are the days of those ugly things that poked at odd angles into the flower bed, whose pallid light never even lasted till the party was over!

Thanks for the hub! Can you use solar power in places where it snows in the winter?

Yes Kathy there are solar lights which are snowproof :) Since there are less daylight hours in winter, they won't charge up as high from the sun's rays, but they will still work, maybe just won't last quite as many hours per night. Also, if they get covered by snow, they can't collect the sun, but if you brush off the snow, they'll start working again straight away.
